How Slowing Down Helped Me Notice the Life I Already Had
Here's something I've been noticing on my walks lately. Maybe it's something you need too. 🌿
This morning, Bailey and I walked to the mailbox.
We've made this same walk hundreds of times.
It's not a long driveway.
There isn't anything remarkable about it.
Most days it's simply one more thing to check off the list before getting back to work.
But lately, I've been walking a little slower.
Not because I've had more time.
Because I'm beginning to realize that some of the things I've been searching for aren't found by moving faster.
Bailey doesn't seem to be in any hurry.
He stops to smell the grass.
He watches the birds.
He notices sounds I never hear.
He explores the same path as though he's seeing it for the first time.
Meanwhile, I'm usually thinking about the next phone call, the next load, the next bill, or the next thing that needs my attention.
Standing there this morning, it occurred to me...
I've walked this same driveway so many times that I stopped noticing it.
Not because it changed.
Because I did.
Somewhere along the way, I became so focused on where I was going that I forgot to pay attention to where I already was.
I wonder how often we do that with life.
We wait for the next season.
The next opportunity.
The next answer.
The next chapter.
All the while, today's gifts quietly pass us by.
I'm beginning to think God doesn't always speak louder.
Sometimes I just get quieter.
And maybe that's why these walks have started meaning so much to me.
Not because the mailbox is important.
But because somewhere between the house and the mailbox, I remember what is.
I remember why we work so hard.
I remember that this little piece of land is a gift.
I remember that Bailey never seems concerned about tomorrow.
I remember that peace isn't always found after everything gets finished.
Sometimes it's found in the middle of ordinary moments we almost walked right past.
Maybe that's what this little walk has become for me.
Not a destination.
A reminder.
🌿 What I'm Learning
Sometimes we spend so much time looking ahead that we stop noticing what's already in front of us.
The next season.
The next opportunity.
The next answer.
The next chapter.
But peace isn't always waiting at the finish line.
Sometimes it's waiting along the driveway we've walked hundreds of times before.
I'm learning that slowing down doesn't mean I'm falling behind.
It simply means I'm paying attention again.
And maybe that's something you need today, too.

Something to Take With You
Maybe there's something ordinary in your own life you've stopped noticing.
A morning cup of coffee.
The view outside your window.
Your dog waiting for you to come outside.
A conversation with someone you love.
The drive home.
A little piece of land.
Or a path you've walked hundreds of times before.
You don't necessarily need more time.
Maybe you just need to be present for a little more of the time you already have.
Ask yourself:
What have I been walking past while I've been so busy trying to get somewhere else?
Slow down long enough to notice it.
Sometimes the little lights we're looking for have been right beside us all along. ☀️
