Towing Services

At Durrett Recovery, towing isn’t just a service — it’s a family tradition built on care, safety, and community. As a family‑owned and operated light‑duty towing and auto transport company, we proudly serve Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Harrisonburg, Virginia, moving more than 4,000 vehicles each year with precision and respect. Licensed by DMV and DOT as a Property Carrier, we uphold the highest standards of safety, compliance, and professionalism on every haul.

Beyond towing, we support fellow truckers and tow companies with essential products through our online store, helping them stay safe, legal, and prepared for any challenge on the road. Our blog extends that mission, offering practical insights for truckers, dealers, and entrepreneurs — from starting and running a successful tow business to managing employees and staying motivated through tough times.

Whether it’s transporting classic cars, motorcycles, or dealer auction vehicles, we treat every tow with genuine care. At Durrett Recovery, we believe in making the process smooth, simple, and respectful for everyone we serve. We’re more than a towing company — we’re a partner in keeping Virginia’s roads and businesses moving forward.

Durrett Recovery began with a simple mission: to serve our community with honesty, safety, and respect. As a family‑owned towing and auto transport company, we’ve grown from helping local dealers move vehicles to becoming a trusted partner for auctions, repossession companies, and fleet operators across Virginia. Each year, we move thousands of vehicles — from everyday autos to classic and custom rides — always treating them as if they were our own.

But our story doesn’t end on the road. Through our blog and online store, we share the tools, supplies, and hard‑earned lessons that help truckers, tow companies, and entrepreneurs succeed. Whether you’re looking for practical advice, motivation to push through challenges, or products to stay safe and legal, we’re here to support you.

Durrett Recovery isn’t just about towing — it’s about building resilience, fostering community, and showing that strong values can drive both business and life forward.

Types of Towing and Who We Serve

🚗 Open Transport

Open transport is the most common and affordable way to move vehicles. You’ve likely seen large carriers on the interstate hauling multiple cars — that’s open transport in action. While cost‑effective, vehicles are exposed to weather and road debris. For everyday cars, this option is reliable and budget‑friendly. If you’re moving a high‑value, antique, or specialty vehicle, you may prefer enclosed transport for added protection.

🚙 Enclosed Transport

Enclosed transport offers maximum protection, shielding vehicles from the elements during transit. Think of it as moving your car inside a mobile garage. This premium service is ideal for classic, luxury, or custom vehicles where safety is the top priority. Because enclosed carriers use specialized equipment and consume more fuel, the cost is higher — but the peace of mind is unmatched.

🛻 Tow Truck Transport

Light‑duty towing is typically handled with flatbeds, rollbacks, or wheel‑lift trucks.

  • Flatbeds/rollbacks can haul multiple vehicles, depending on truck size.
  • Wheel‑lift trucks (snatch trucks/wreckers) usually move one vehicle at a time, with tow dollies available for AWD or lowered vehicles.

These trucks are versatile, handling operable and inoperable vehicles, accident recovery, repossessions, roadside assistance, and everyday residential pickups.

🚚 Trailer (Hot Shot) Transport

Hot shot transport uses pickup trucks with attached trailers.

  • Smaller trailers (1 vehicle) pair with 150/1500 trucks.
  • Larger trailers (2–3 vehicles) require 250/2500 or 350/3500 trucks.

With the right equipment, these rigs can move both operable and inoperable vehicles. They’re especially useful for transporting cars from auctions, dealerships, and fleet locations.

"MOVE OVER LAW"

The towing industry in America has a high fatality rate, with the towing industry having the highest fatality rate among all private industries in America.  The fatality rate in the towing industry is 15 imes more than the national average of 2.9 deaths per 100,000 workers.  Truck driving is one of the professions that presents the most dangers for workers in the United States.  According to the latest report from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, truck drivers and other transportation workers are among the leading groups with the highest number of deaths compared to private-sector employees.

These vest or any reflective equipment to help you be seen anytime you are out of your truck working is extremely helpful.  In addition, for the safety of everyone on and off the road, all 50 states have Move Over laws.   All states require drivers to move over and slow down for emergency vehicles with flashing lights.   In 19 states and Washington, DC, laws include moving over for all vehicles with flashing or hazard lights, such as: law enforcement, EMS, fire, highway maintenance, construction, utility, trash, and disabled vehicles.

When a vehicle with flashing lights is stopped on or next to a roadway, drivers approaching the vehicle should:

  • change into a lane not immediately adjacent to the vehicle, or
  • slow down to a reasonable speed if you’re unable to safely make a lane change.

Violation of the Move Over law results in fines and in some cases jail time.  Remember, next time you see flashing lights on the side of the road, Move Over. It’s the Law.
