More Than a Tow. More Than a Business.

If you ask most people what we do, they'll probably tell you we own a towing and auto transport company. And they're right. But that's only part of the story.

We're Wayne and Brenda Durrett—a husband and wife who have spent nearly 30 years building a marriage, raising a family, working, starting over, and figuring out a lot of life together.

Durrett Recovery has become a big part of that story. We started the company in 2015 and have since moved thousands of vehicles throughout Virginia.

We've worked long days. Answered early morning phone calls. Solved unexpected problems. Spent thousands of miles on the road. Worked side by side. Disagreed about how something should be done. Figured it out. And got up the next day and did it again.

Somewhere along the way, we realized we weren't just building a business.

We were building a life.

The Hero

Wayne has spent years doing work he genuinely loves.

He's the one usually behind the wheel, underneath the truck, in the garage, figuring out how to make something work when the day doesn't go according to plan.

He's moved thousands of vehicles, helped countless people, and built a reputation around something pretty simple:

Show up. Do the work. Take care of people.

Towing and auto transport require responsibility, patience, problem-solving, and a willingness to keep going when things don't go as planned.

Those qualities have shaped far more than our business. They've shaped our life.

The Heartbeat

I spent more than twenty years in real estate before eventually starting the auto transport business with Wayne.

At first, I thought I was simply “the one in the office.” Answering phones. Keeping records. Scheduling loads. Paying bills. Trying to keep everything organized. But eventually I realized something.

I wasn't just helping run the business. I was helping protect its heartbeat.

The systems. The customers. The money. The decisions. The things happening behind the scenes that allow the truck to keep moving. And over the years, that role has grown into something else too. Writing. Creating. Building resources from what we've learned. And asking a question that has become increasingly important to both of us:

What good is working so hard to build a life with more freedom if we're always too busy to actually live it?

Building the Work—and the Life

Wayne and I are very different people. That has occasionally made working together interesting. 😂 But it has also taught us a lot. About marriage. Business. Money. Responsibility. Faith. Failure. Starting over. Giving each other space. Knowing when to step in. Knowing when to let the other person handle it. And learning how to remain husband and wife when so much of our life is also tied to the business we run together.

We've learned that building a successful business isn't only about trucks, equipment, customers or moving more vehicles.

It's about building something you believe in. Something you're proud of. Something that supports the life you're trying to build instead of slowly taking that life over.

Build the work. Live the life. Remember what matters.

From Durrett Recovery to Axles & Acres

That's where Axles & Acres came from. Not from a marketing plan. From our actual life.

The axles are the work—the trucks, towing, auto transport, business, equipment, road miles and lessons learned from building something of our own.

The acres are where we come home—the land, our marriage, family, projects, ordinary days, faith, and learning how to actually enjoy some of the freedom we've worked so hard to build. And somewhere between the two are all the things life has taught us along the way.

Some of those lessons become stories. Some become guides. Some become books. Some become videos or honest product reviews. And some are simply little lights worth remembering.

We call those beacons.

Some of the little lights that helped us find our way were left by people who probably never knew we needed them. Maybe that's part of why we want to leave a few along the way for somebody else.

Over the years, we've learned a lot by doing things the hard way, figuring things out as we went, and finding tools and resources that genuinely made the work—or everyday life—a little easier.

So when something we've learned can save someone else time, help them avoid a mistake, answer a question, or simply make life a little better, we try to share it.

That's what you'll find in our Helpful Resources—towing equipment and tools, honest product reviews, books and guides we've created from our own experience, business resources, acreage finds, and other things that have earned a place in our work or everyday life.

Some are things we've created. Some are things we use. Some are things we'd recommend to a friend if they asked us what had helped.

We don't want to recommend things just to have something to sell. If it's here, there's a reason.

Still Building. Still Choosing.

Everything we share comes from real life.

If we write about it, we've lived some part of it.

If we recommend it, there's a reason.

We aren't trying to present a perfect business, a perfect marriage or a perfect life. We've had good years and hard ones. We've built things and lost things. We've gotten things right and gotten plenty wrong.

But after all these years, we're still here. Still building. Still believing. Still learning what deserves our time and what doesn't. Still trying to follow God in the way we work and live. Still choosing each other.

And still figuring out how to keep the business in its proper place when the trucks are parked at the end of the day.

That's Axles & Acres.

A husband and wife, out in the country, running a towing business together, trying to build something worthwhile, follow God, protect what matters, and enjoy some of the life we've worked so hard to build.
