What is the Move Over law?
The Move Over law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down when approaching stationary emergency or roadside workers to enhance safety on the road.
The Move Over law is a traffic regulation designed to protect emergency responders, roadside workers, tow truck drivers and other personnel working near roadways. It mandates that drivers either change lanes away from these vehicles or reduce their speed significantly when passing them. This law is in effect in all 50 states, although specific requirements and penalties may vary by state.
The primary goal of the Move Over law is to enhance the safety of those working on or near the road. By requiring drivers to create a buffer zone, the law aims to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries to emergency personnel and roadside workers. This is particularly important given the increasing number of incidents where stationary vehicles are struck by passing cars.
Violating the Move Over law can result in significant penalties, including fines that can reach up to $1,250 for first time offenders. More severe consequences, including jail time and higher fines may apply if the violation leads to serious injuries. Recent updates to the law have expanded protections to include additional public service vehicles, such as animal control and parking enforcement vehicles, when their lights are activated.
Understanding and adhering to the Move Over law is crucial for ensuring the safety of both roadside workers and drivers. Increased awareness and compliance can help prevent accidents and save lives on the road. Always remember to move over or slow down when you see emergency vehicles or roadside workers to contribute to a safe driving environment for everyone.
