Towing & Auto Transport

Family-Owned. Experienced. Built on Showing Up.

At Durrett Recovery, towing isn't just a service—it's a family business built on care, responsibility, and showing up when it matters.

We are a family-owned and operated light-duty towing and auto transport company proudly serving Fredericksburg, Richmond, Harrisonburg, and surrounding areas of Virginia.

Each year, we move more than 4,000 vehicles, from everyday cars and dealer inventory to auction vehicles, classics, specialty vehicles, and commercial transport.

Durrett Recovery is licensed by the DMV and DOT as a Property Carrier, and we take the responsibility of transporting someone else's vehicle seriously.

Whether we're moving one vehicle for an individual customer or helping a commercial client keep vehicles moving, our goal is simple:

Do the job safely. Communicate clearly. Take care of the vehicle. And treat people the way we'd want to be treated.

Move Over. Slow Down. Help Keep Roadside Workers Safe.

Every day, tow truck operators, law enforcement officers, first responders, highway workers, and others work alongside moving traffic.

When you see a vehicle stopped along the roadway with flashing or hazard lights, slow down, pay attention, and move over when required and when it is safe to do so.

Those few seconds of extra caution can help protect someone who is simply trying to do their job and make it home safely.

Please know and follow the Move Over laws in the state where you're driving.

See the lights. Slow down. Move over.

Interested in Getting Into Towing & Auto Transport?

We've spent years building and running our own towing and auto transport business and have moved thousands of vehicles along the way.

If you're here because you're thinking about getting into this business yourself—not because you need a vehicle transported—we've put together resources based on what we've learned from actually doing the work.

Whether you're just starting to explore the idea, trying to understand what you need to get set up, looking for legitimate work, or already running a small operation of your own, start with where you are.

You don't have to figure everything out at once.

1. Just Thinking About Getting Started?
Start With the Free Checklists

If you're still trying to understand what's involved, begin with our free towing and auto transport checklists.

They're a simple place to start getting a clearer picture of the basics before investing in equipment, setting up a business, or trying to figure out everything at once.

2. Ready to Understand the Setup?
Non-CDL Towing & Auto Transport Beginner Guide

If you're ready to go beyond the checklists, this guide walks through the practical pieces involved in getting started with a non-CDL towing and auto transport operation including links to all you need to get licensed and setup.

It's designed to help you better understand the first important steps in getting going, the numbers, requirements, equipment, business setup, and other basics you'll need to research and think through before you start hauling vehicles.

We built this from opening and running several auto transport businesses and from the perspective of people who actually do this work—not just people talking about it.

3. Set Up and Ready to Find Work?
From Setup to First Load

Getting set up is one thing.

Figuring out where the work actually comes from is another.

If you understand the basics and you're trying to figure out how to find legitimate work, work with brokers, understand loads, keep track of opportunities, and move from being set up to actually hauling vehicles, this is the next guide in the process.

This guide includes all the links we've gathered through our years where you can signup for work, whether your looking for roadside assistance work, auto transport work, customer work, insurance & broker work, local and long distance work and the list goes on.

4. Already Running Your Own Business?
We Didn't Build a Business Just to Work All the Time

Sometimes getting started isn't the problem anymore.

The business is running—but it's starting to run you.

We know how easily that can happen, especially in a small operation where one person or a husband-and-wife team is responsible for nearly everything.

The phone. The customers. The truck. The paperwork. The bills. The scheduling. The problems. And somewhere in the middle of keeping all of that going, the business you built to create more independence can slowly begin taking over the life you were trying to build.

We created We Didn't Build a Business Just to Work All the Time for small business owners who are ready to look at what deserves their time, what can be simplified, what “enough” actually looks like, and how to begin building a business that supports their life instead of continually consuming it.

It's not about giving up ambition or working less just for the sake of working less.

It's about building a business that works for you instead of spending your life working for it.
